We are very excited to announce the 2016 SJRHEM Photo Contest. This photography competition is open to all personel who work in the Saint John Regional Emergency Department in any role including clinical, admin, support, volunteers etc.
The themes of this competition mirror our mission statement:
CARING, RESPECT, INTEGRITY AND FAIRNESS
WHILE WORKING AS A PROGRAM TO ACHIEVE EXCELLENCE
Our aim is to improve the look and feel of our facility, for both staff and patients, by decorating the walls and corridors with high quality, thought inspiring photographic artwork that reflect the themes above.

There will be a winner for each category and an overall winner. All will receive a framed print of their winning photo. The overall winner will be awarded the “Winner of the SJRHEM Photo Contest 2016” award.
The closing date for applications is September 1st 2016.

SJRHEM Photo Contest 2016 Official Rules
Purpose
The Saint John Regional Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine (hereby known as SJRHEM) invites you to participate in a photo contest and submit photos that reflect the Department of Emergency Medicine’s values of Caring, Respect, Integrity and Fairness. A selection of the submitted photos will be put on display in the emergency department.
Term
The SJRHEM Photo Contest (hereby knows as the Contest) ends September 1, 2016, 5 p.m. (AT).
By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to the Official Rules and warrants that his or her entry complies with all requirements set out in the Official Rules. This is a skill-based contest and chance plays no part in the determination of winners.
Who may enter?
The Contest is open only to Saint John Regional Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine employee and non-employee personnel only. Judges, all other Horizon Health Network (Horizon) employee and non-employee personnel, including staff from the Communications and Community Relations Department staff are excluded from entry.
Disqualified Entries
As entries are received they will be reviewed to see if they have complied with the Official Rules. If an entry is disqualified for any reason during the term of the contest the entrant will be notified by email. The contest judges’ decision is final. Any re-entry will be considered a new entry and must comply with all rules of the contest.
No consideration will be given for the resubmission of a disqualified entry past the contest deadline, regardless of when the disqualification takes place. Any disqualification that takes place after the term of the contest but prior to judging will be removed from consideration and not considered an entry.
How to enter?
To enter, visit www.sjrhem.ca — SJRHEM Photo Contest; download an entry form and complete with the required information, including your name, position, location of work, email address, telephone number for notification purposes.
Email your photograph and entry form, in accordance with the instructions that follow to [email protected] (subject: photo contest) or via online entry above.
Please note that each image must include its own entry form.

Restrictions – Due to privacy and policy restrictions:
- No photos of patients or patient information taken either inside or outside the Saint John Regional Hospital’s Department of Emergency Medicine can be used.
There is no limit on the number of entries per person. However, each photo must be entered separately. Each entry must comply with the following requirements:
Photograph Requirements
- Photographs must have been taken since January 1, 2014.
- Photographs must be in digital format.
- Only online entries will be eligible. No print or film submissions will be accepted for entry into this Contest.
- Digital files must be 10 megabytes or smaller, saved in JPEG or JPG format.
- Minor burning, dodging and/or color correction is acceptable.
- Hand tinting and cropping are acceptable.
- Fish-eye camera lenses are acceptable. High dynamic range images (HDR) and stitched panoramas are acceptable only if the combined parts are all made at same time.
- Any changes to the original photograph not itemized here are unacceptable and will render the photograph ineligible for a prize.
- Photographs that include sculptures, statues, paintings, and other works of art will be accepted as long as they do not constitute copyright infringement or fraud; entrants must be prepared to provide a release form as described below in “Consent and Release.” When photographing the work of others, it must be as an object in its environment and not a full-frame close-up of another person’s art.
- The photograph, in its entirety, must be a single work of original material taken by the contest entrant.
- By entering the contest, the entrant represents, acknowledges, and warrants that the submitted photograph is an original work created solely by the entrant, that the photograph does not infringe on the copyrights, trademarks, moral rights, rights of privacy/publicity or intellectual property rights of any person or entity, and that no other party has any right, title, claim, or interest in the photograph.
- Any photograph, in the sole and unfettered discretion of Horizon Health Network, the judges or the SJRH Emergency Department, that contains obscene, provocative, defamatory, sexually explicit, or otherwise objectionable or inappropriate content will be disqualified.
- The entries in each category will be judged separately, in accordance with the Judging Criteria, as defined below. All entries must be submitted and received by September 1st, 2016, 5 p.m. (AT).
Consent and Releases
If the photograph contains any material or elements that are not owned by the entrant and/or which are subject to the rights of third parties and/or if any persons appear in the photograph, the entrant is responsible for obtaining, prior to submission of the photograph, any and all releases and consents necessary to permit the exhibition and use of the photograph in the manner set forth in these official rules without additional compensation.
If any person appearing in any photograph is under the age of majority in their province/ territory of residence the signature of a parent or legal guardian is required on each release.
Entrants that include non-employee personnel must include a signed Horizon Health Network Consent for Patient Interview, Photography
And/or Visual/Audio Recordings consent form for each of the following items appearing in the photograph submitted:
- Guardian/Parent if under age of majority
- Owner of a sculpture, artwork or other copyrighted material
- Person
- Private property
This consent authorizes Horizon and its licensees (“Authorized Parties”), and the Department of Emergency Medicine to reproduce, distribute, display, and create derivative works of the entry in connection with Horizon, in any media now or hereafter known. All releases must be in the form provided. Failure to provide such releases may result in disqualification and selection of an alternate winner.
Contest Prizes
The First Place winner in each category will each receive a plaque-mounted or framed print of their photo. The winning photographs will be displayed in the Emergency Department area of SJRH and on the “Caring, Respect, Integrity and Fairness” photo contest official winners poster, and also on www.sjrhem.ca. Semifinalists will have their photograph displayed in the Emergency Department area of the SJRH and on the above website. One overall Grand Prize winner will receive the award of the “Winner SJRHEM Photograph Contest 2016”, The Grand Prize is non-transferable and no cash alternative is available.
Judging
Contest consists of a three judge panel of photographic or communications experts who will select 10 semifinal entries in each category from among all eligible entries based on the following criteria (“Judging Criteria”):
- Creativity 30%
- Photographic quality 30%
- Reflection of Category themes 40%
Judges will select from the semifinalists of one First Place Winner from each of the four categories based on the Judging Criteria. Judges will then select a Grand Prize winner from among the four First Place winners.
Winners will be chosen by October 1st 2016, and notified by email. Decisions of the judges are final and binding.
License
By entering the contest, all entrants grant an irrevocable, perpetual, worldwide non-exclusive license to authorized parties, to reproduce, distribute, display and create derivative works of the entries (along with a name credit) in connection with Horizon, in any media now or hereafter known, including, but not limited to:
- display at a potential exhibition of winners;
- publication in Horizon Connects newsletter or online highlighting entries or winners of the Contest;
- as part of the purpose of this contest is to create a [photo bank for Horizon, all entries whether finalist or not, may be used by Horizon and the Department of Emergency Medicine. Parties will not be required to pay any additional consideration or seek any additional approval in connection with such use.
Limitation of Liability
By entering this contest, all entrants agree to release, discharge, and hold harmless Horizon and its partners, affiliates, subsidiaries, agents and their employees, officers, directors, and representatives from any claims, losses, and damages arising out of their participation in this contest or any contest- related activities and the acceptance and use, misuse, or possession of any prize awarded hereunder.
Though Horizon will make every effort to ensure that a photo credit is given each time the photo appears, they may appear separately from the photo for design purposes. In an event where the photo entry is mistakenly shown without credit or mislabeled, entrant agrees to pursue no other action than to simply notify Horizon’s Communications Department of the error. It will be corrected in subsequent editions or upgrades.
Horizon assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in the operation or transmission; communications line failure; theft or destruction of or unauthorized access to contest entries or entry forms; or alteration of entries or entry forms. Horizon is not responsible for any problems with or technical malfunction of any telephone network or lines, computer online systems, servers or providers, computer equipment, software, failure of any email entry to be received on account of technical problems or traffic congestion on the Internet or at any website, human errors of any kind, or any combination thereof, including any injury or damage to entrants’ or any other persons’ computers related to or resulting from participation, uploading or downloading of any materials related to in this Contest
Conditions
THIS CONTEST IS VOID WHERE PROHIBITED. Entrants agree that this contest shall be subject to and governed by the laws of the Province of New Brunswick and the forum for any dispute shall be in the Province of New Brunswick, Canada. To the extent permitted by law, the right to litigate, to seek injunctive relief or to make any other recourse to judicial or any other procedure in case of disputes or claims resulting from or on connection with this contest are hereby excluded and any entrant expressly waives any and all such rights. Certain restrictions may apply. Entries void if the Department determines the photograph to not be an original, or if the entries are illegible, incomplete, damaged, irregular, altered, counterfeit, produced in error or obtained through fraud or theft.
By entering, entrants also agree (a) to be bound by these Official Rules; (b) that the decisions of the judges are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to the contest; and (c) if the entrant wins that Horizon may use the winning photographs and each winner’s name, photograph, likeness, and/ or voice in any publicity or advertising relating to the contest or future promotions without compensation or approval (except where prohibited by law). In the event that the selected winner(s) of any prize is/are ineligible, cannot be traced or does/do not respond within 10 days to a winner notification as required by the “Contest Prizes” Rules above, or refuses the prize, the prize will be forfeited and the Department of Emergency Medicine, in its sole discretion, may choose whether to award the prize to another entrant.
The Department of Emergency Medicine reserves the right to verify the validity and originality of any entry and/or entrant (including an entrant’s identity and address) and to disqualify any entrant who submits an entry that is not in accordance with these Official Rules or who tampers with the entry process. Failure by the Department to enforce any of its rights at any stage does not constitute a waiver of those rights.
All submitted photos/contest entries remain the property of Horizon Health Network and will not be returned.
Right to Cancel or Suspend Contest
If for any reason the contest is not capable of operating as planned, due to technical difficulties, or any other causes beyond the control of the Emergency Department that corrupt or affect the administration, security, fairness, integrity, patient/public safety, or proper conduct of this contest, Horizon reserves the right, at its sole discretion, to disqualify any individual(s) who tamper with the entry process, and/or to cancel, terminate, modify, or suspend the contest.
Winners List
Entrants are responsible for complying with these Official Rules. Winners’ names will be available on www.sjrhem.ca under SJRHEM Photo Contest after October 1st, 2016.
Data Privacy
Entrants agree that the personal data you’ve supplied, may be processed, shared, and otherwise used for the purposes and within the context of the contest and any other purposes outlined in these Official Rules. The data may also be used by the SJRH Emergency Department in order to verify the participant’s identity, or to otherwise verify the participant’s eligibility to participate in the Contest.
