Objectives
Objectives will vary depending on your program and level of PoCUS training. Please review the following options and let us know in advance which track you want to follow. Be aware that completing all the requirements for CPoCUS IP may not always be possible within this 1-month rotation.
- Track 1 – Emergency Medicine – Core CPoCUS Curriculum – Aorta, eFAST, Cardiac, Obstetric, Lung – aiming to complete CPoCUS Core IP exam
- Track 2 – Emergency Medicine – Intro to PoCUS, Dal EM Core Curriculum (see checklist)
- Track 3 – Emergency Medicine – Advanced PoCUS
- Track 4 – Off Service Resident – Intro to PoCUS, targeted specialty specific PoCUS applications
Please note that although we make every effort to focus your experience to your track, scanning shifts are dependent on the patients in the department on the day. You are likely to see / perform a number of advanced applications during your rotation.
The generic EM SJ Resident Learning Objectives – Checklist is applicable to all Tracks. Please ensure you have printed this out and keep it with you during each shift.
Pre-Reading / Viewing
See checklist below
Shifts
EM Residents
- 8 x 8hrs scanning shifts – During these shifts you will not be expected to see new patients. You will be directed by you supervisor to perform specific scans on patients in the dept. Your supervisor will directly supervise as many of these as possible. However, as you progress, some of these scans will reviewed indirectly via the QPath image archive.
- 8 x 8hrs clinical PoCUS shifts – During these shifts you will be expected to see new patients. However, the focus will still be on integrating PoCUS into pt management. Also, expect to be called to perform scans by other MDs on shift.
Please note, getting the required number of scans for CPoCUS IP is very difficult to achieve in 16 shifts. You will need to be very proactive in order succeed. Hopefully you have already logged some scans prior to this rotation. We recommend the CanPoCUS IP School to help boost your scan numbers.
Off Service Residents
- Clinical PoCUS Shifts – During these shifts you will be expected to see new patients. However, the focus will be on integrating PoCUS into pt management. Also, expect to be called to perform scans by other MDs on shift. We will do our best to ensure that you learn and perform scans that you have identified in your objectives.
Assessment
- Shift evaluation sheets – completed at the end of each shift
- DAL EM Core PoCUS Competency assessment – will be completed during the course of the rotation
- CPoCUS IP exam – If the required numbers of scans have been completed this will be done either in person or via videolink at the end of the rotation.
